Proprietary Blends vs. Full Label Transparency: Why the Difference Actually Matters
A proprietary blend isn't automatically a red flag, but it does mean accepting a specific kind of uncertainty that a fully disclosed label doesn't ask of you.
What a proprietary blend actually is
Under FDA labeling rules, a company can list several ingredients together under a blend name (like "Energy Complex" or "Metabolic Blend") and disclose only the total combined weight of that blend, rather than breaking out each ingredient's individual amount. This is legal, provided the ingredients are still listed by name in descending order by weight.
Why companies use them
The most commonly cited legitimate reason is protecting a specific formulation from being easily copied by competitors — genuinely relevant in a crowded, low-differentiation supplement market. There's also a less flattering possibility: blending allows a company to list an ingredient that sounds impressive on the front of the label while including only a token amount, which wouldn't be obvious without individual disclosure.
What you lose without individual disclosure
The core issue is that "descending order by weight" only tells you relative ranking, not actual amounts. If a blend contains six ingredients and the total blend weight is 500mg, the first-listed ingredient could be anywhere from a meaningful dose down to barely more than the second-listed one — you genuinely can't tell from the label alone.
What full disclosure gives you
A label listing each ingredient with its own specific milligram or microgram amount lets you directly compare what's in the product to the doses used in published research on that ingredient — the single most useful thing you can do when evaluating whether a supplement's claims are plausible.
A reasonable standard to apply
Full ingredient disclosure isn't a guarantee of effectiveness, and a proprietary blend isn't automatic proof of a bad product. But when two products are otherwise comparable, the one that shows you exactly what you're taking gives you more information to make an informed decision — which is a reasonable tiebreaker.
